Welcome to Slice of Life Tuesday!

“If you wait for inspiration to write, you’re not a writer, you’re a waiter.”

–Dan Poynter

“The beautiful part of writing is that you don’t have to get it right the first time, unlike, say, a brain surgeon.”

–Robert Cormier

Hey Middle School!  Welcome to Slice of Life Tuesday!  The folks at Two Writing Teachers host a weekly slice opportunity similar to the March Slice of Life Challenge.
Write, slice, share!
Today would be a good day to take a photo of your Black Out Poem, type it up, and then share it at Two Writing Teachers.  Read that carefully, I'm inviting you to share it THERE.  You can share it HERE...up to you...totally optional, but if you share it THERE, it WILL get you some good feedback from some good writers!
Go for it!

Day 30! Slice of Life 2014 Call for Slices

Heeeeeeeey Middle School!

One day left!

You can do it!

Finish strong!

The highest number of slices
we've had yet is 9,
not counting the first day
when we had 24.

Let's try to beat that record!
Call or text someone who hasn't been
blogging and talk them
into adding their slice
to the collection today.
Can't wait to see what you have!
(7pm Sunday deadline please!)

Day 29...almost there! Saturday Call for Slices!

Hey there slicers!  Here's some inspiration I borrowed from the grown up Slice of Life Story Challenge.  It involves baby raccoons!  (Now you have to go look, don't you...you can't resist that!)

Try your own animal conversation story today!  We talk for our animals all the time out here on the prairie!  What would your animals, or some wild animals, have to say if they could talk?

Can't wait to listen in!

Serve them up!

Let's say a 6 pm deadline today...I have to go car shopping tonight.  Ick!

Thursday, March 27, 2014

Greetings to all my slicing students!

Here is your call for today...

You'll notice: each line - six words!

We'll be trying these - After Break...

Might as well try it now!

Follow the link for more examples!

Can't wait to see today's slices!

Thursday, March 27, Call for Slices! Slice of Life 2014

Hey there Middle School Slicers!

Here's your Thursday Call for Slices...time to serve them up!

You have a 9pm deadline today...
I'm going to My Ol' Man's art show opening
and won't be back until later.   He's a a really good painter
and I can't wait to see how his latest work does!

He loves to paint barns!  Isn't he good?

Here's a bit of inspiration for you from A.A. Milne,
the author of the Winnie the Pooh books:

"You can't stay in your corner of the forest waiting for others to come to you.
You have to go to them sometimes."
- A.A. Milne, Winnie the Pooh

Don't stay in your corner of the forest today...
Get out there and go!
Talk to a friend and remind them to slice!
Can't wait to see what you've got!

March 26 Call for Slices AND some inspiration! Slice of Life 2014

Hey there Slicers!

I swiped some inspiration for you from yesterday's
Classroom Slice of Life Challenge Call for Slices.
Read on and ask yourself...are you summarizing or storytelling?
Try turning your small moments...
your slices of your day...
into stories!
I can't wait to see what you put together!
Keep up the good work!

"It’s Day 25 Classroom Slicers!
In the book Crafting True Stories by Lucy Calkins and Marjorie Martinelli, part of the Units of Study for Opinion, Information, and Narrative Writing, small moment stories are the topic. What better place to look for inspiration for Slice of Life stories than a book about writing small moments?
One important strategy for a small moment writer is to write in scenes, not summaries. It is so easy to slip into summarizing when recounting a story: First I did this. Then I did that. Then this happened.
But the most powerful stories put the reader right in the action, telling what happened bit by bit: “Watch out!” Sarah yelled. I looked behind me, and there, barreling toward me at full speed, was my brother. And he looked MAD.
Today as you write your Slice, think – am I summarizing? Or am I storytelling?"

Sweet Sunday Call for Slices - March 23 -Slice of Life 2014

Happy Sunday Middle Schoool!
It's time for your Sunday Slice of Life!  You have a 7pm deadline today.
Here's a bit of inspiration for you if you are searching:

Take a look at what I loved yesterday.
6th Grade in particular will be interested in this information.

After reading that,

How about you blog about the book I am reading aloud to your class?

Tell about any book you are reading over break.

Tell about the BEST book you ever read.

Tell about your own "having someone read aloud to you" memories.

There you go...FOUR different ideas!
No more of this, "I don't have anything to write about!" stuff!

Slice on!

Spring Break Saturday! Call for Slices March 22

Hey There My Slicers Peeps!
How's your Saturday going so far?
Here's your call to link your slices...remember to get the URL for your post and not your whole blog!
Here's a bit of weekend inspiration for you from Anna Gratz Cockerville
on Day 14 of the Classroom Challenge:

Samuel Beckett once wrote:
"James Joyce was a synthesizer, trying to bring in as much as he could. I am an analyzer, trying to leave out as much as I can."
Today as you write, consider: Are you a synthesizer or an analyzer? Are you the kind of writer who strives to capture every detail, to make your writing come alive with description? Or are you the kind of writer who favors simplicity, who aims to strip away all but the essential?
Honor the kind of writer you are, and aim to make your writing the best it can be, in whatever style you choose to write.
Don't let your writing relax even though it's Spring Break...
stretch those muscles!
Google around for some good ideas and write them!
Can't wait to see what you come up with...make it your best!
I have a busy day today, so you have a late deadline...9pm!
Text a friend...encourage them to blog their slice as well!

Call for Slices! Day 21 - Slice of Life 2014

Hey there Middle School!

It's Day 21 and for those of you who are in for 15...

But for those more...ahem...committed souls...

You are still in it!
Keep up the good work!

Please go ahead and write today's slice today and let me see it before you leave school so I can get all of the grade part done.

Then don't forget to blog your slice for today here and your slices for Spring Break as well...I'll be here everyday calling LOUDLY so you can hear me!

Can't wait to see what kind of creative stuff
you come up with over the week off.

(Want a chuckle?  Read what I sliced last night...this is what happens when I write too late at night!)

See you soon!

Day 20!!! Only 11 more days left! Call for Slices - Thursday, March 20, Slice of Life 2014

Hey Middle School!

It's Day 20!
For those of you in for 15, you'll be done after this Friday's slice, which I am going to ask you to write in class.
For those of you in for 25, you are so close to being done!
For those of you in for 31, you only have 11 days left!

Here are some hints from the slicing experts at Two Writing Teachers:
You can see the original post here, but I have copied and pasted some of their
good ideas below, along with a graphic you should recognize.

"Stacey’s info-graphic is a great reminder of what a Slice of Life Story is and isn’t. When I’ve  worked on writing projects with Lucy Calkins, I’ve often heard her say, "We need to bring the lion out of the marble.” She is, of course, referring to a clunky draft that needs to be fine tuned so that the real message or meaning comes across.
It’s tempting to write a Slice that is a summary or a retelling of an entire day, or an entire event, or an entire time of year. However, the real gems are often the zoomed-in, small moments that capture a feeling, an interaction, a lesson, an important memory.
Today, why not look closer at your Slice and see if there are any lions hiding in the marble?
WRITE a slice of life story on your own blog.
SHARE a link to your post in the comments section.
GIVE comments to at least three other SOLSC Classroom bloggers."

The bold print is mine, Middle School.  Are you still telling about putting on your shoes and brushing your teeth?  Why don't you look for some hidden lions today, my metaphorical thinkers! Look beyond the paint, for Pete's sake!

And while you're at it...are you living up to your end of the deal by providing comments to at least three other Classroom Bloggers?
Go for it!
Make someone's day by giving them a virtual pat on the back!

Now...go post your slice!
